Cannonau di Sardegna, "LE SABBIE", 2005, organic redwine, Meloni Vini
The predecessor of this organic wine was given the main gold prize at the Biofach in Nuremberg in 2006, but the current vintage was given a recommendation as well. The basis for the firm, full body of the Le Sabbie is the Cannonau grape, to which 15 % Syrah and Barbera have been added, and these contribute to the elegant structure of this outstanding organic red wine. The wine is intentionally given little exposure to wood. All in all, this wine is aged for 2 years, 6 months of which are spent in barrels of Slovenian oak which hold 5,000 liters. Because of this, Le Sabbie retains its distinctive Sardinian character. With a total acidity of 5 g/l, a dry extract of 30-35 g/l, an alcohol content of 14 % and a residual sugar content of 0.15 g/l, this is a completely dry, rich and complex red wine, which must not be stored before it can be enjoyed. Will drink well now through 2010. Decant 1 hour before serving.
A tip for gourmets: pigeon in a truffle sauce.

Sardinia
For those of us who live in northern Europe, the island of Sardinia is like paradise. Heat, sun, the emerald-green sea, good-looking proud people, tasty cheese, fresh fish, toasted bread, honey and wine. But the land is not easy to farm. The paths are stony, there is a shortage of water, the soil is barren, everything has to be wrested from it with a great deal of effort. At a time and place where dozens of Sardinian wine-growers cleared the land of their vines, and were rewarded for this by the European Community, the five Meloni brothers rolled up their sleeves and got down to some hard work in the hinterland of Cagliari. They had realized that they could only run a successful business on Sardinia if they were able to produce high-quality wines.

The Wine Estate
From the 250 hectares of vineyards which they inherited from their grandfathers, they created one of the most modern wineries in Europe. The cellars are spick and span, modern and have been very well equipped. Since the Melonis are very attached to their home and to nature, they decided from the very beginning to grow their wine as naturally as possible using environmentally-friendly and ecological methods. The history of Meloni Vini began at the end of the 19th century, but the present has always been focused on the future. Thus tradition has always been combined with innovation. This is based on the latest research in the field of pest control without the use of chemicals, of irrigation and fertilization in order to produce wines of the very highest quality and in doing so to spare the environment as much as possible. Meloni Vini can look back on a long and successful history. As a producer of the most exquisite and well-known typical Sardinian wines, Vini Meloni sells these to the entire world. The winery and the vineyards, which cover about 250 hectares, are located in Selargius and the vicinity.
