Kósti, IGT, organic redwine, Meloni Vini
This is an organic wine with a well-structured body, it is an intense dark red, hat a winey-grape bouquet and a compactness which is characterized by well-integrated tannins. Its aging potential is estimated to be between 3 and 4 years, which however still has to be confirmed, since this wine was produced for the first time in 2003.
Winemaking
Kosti is the Sardinian name for maple, and these trees form the boundary for a part of the vineyards which provide the grapes for this organic wine. It is located in the community of Sestu in the hills north of Cagliari. This has been purchased recently by the Meloni family and borders directly on the vineyards of the Meloni winery S. Rosa, where the aromatic varietals are grown and farmed using ecological methods. The stock of the recently purchased vineyards consists of a mixture of Cannonau, Monica and Bovali. They are between 40 and 50 years old and were planted in this combination by the former owners, because at that time they were typical of the Sardinian red wines. It was not until the seventies that wine-growers on Sardinia started to produce wines from only one varietal and to plant their vineyards accordingly. Thus the Kosti is produced mainly from grapes from the old vines. Small parts of Syrah and Barbera from the other Meloni vineyards are added to this Cuvée. Since this mixture is not in accordance with the DOC (controlled wine region) regulations, it can only be declared as an IGT-certified wine.
Sardinia
For those of us who live in northern Europe, the island of Sardinia is like paradise. Heat, sun, the emerald-green sea, good-looking proud people, tasty cheese, fresh fish, toasted bread, honey and wine. But the land is not easy to farm. The paths are stony, there is a shortage of water, the soil is barren, everything has to be wrested from it with a great deal of effort. At a time and place where dozens of Sardinian wine-growers cleared the land of their vines, and were rewarded for this by the European Community, the five Meloni brothers rolled up their sleeves and got down to some hard work in the hinterland of Cagliari. They had realized that they could only run a successful business on Sardinia if they were able to produce high-quality wines.
The Wine Estate
From the 250 hectares of vineyards which they inherited from their grandfathers, they created one of the most modern wineries in Europe. The cellars are spick and span, modern and have been very well equipped. Since the Melonis are very attached to their home and to nature, they decided from the very beginning to grow their wine as naturally as possible using environmentally-friendly and ecological methods. The history of Meloni Vini began at the end of the 19th century, but the present has always been focused on the future. Thus tradition has always been combined with innovation. This is based on the latest research in the field of pest control without the use of chemicals, of irrigation and fertilization in order to produce wines of the very highest quality and in doing so to spare the environment as much as possible. Meloni Vini can look back on a long and successful history. As a producer of the most exquisite and well-known typical Sardinian wines, Vini Meloni sells these to the entire world. The winery and the vineyards, which cover about 250 hectares, are located in Selargius and the vicinity.
